Algonquin Park Canoeing Trip Tips

Author: Suzie Goldie
To properly experience the beauty of Algonquin Park you must take an interior canoe trip. There are many drive-in campgrounds in Algonquin but they are too popular during the summer months. An interior campsite is only accessible by canoe or by hiking in the late spring, summer and fall. During the winter, the interior campgrounds are accessible by cross-country skiing or by snowshoe.

Some of the best canoeing in Canada is found in Algonquin Park. There are literally hundreds of navigable rivers and lakes in the park. These waterways form a two thousand kilometer long system of interconnected canoe routes. As you get further away from the canoe access points, the park becomes much less inhabited. Depending on the route you take you may encounter only a very few number of other canoeists.

The routes in the park are not overly difficult. Some portages are quite long though, so it is best to tackle an easier route for your first trip if you are not very experienced. Park staff maintains the portages. There are two types of portages in the park. Portages that are marked in red on the map are well maintained by staff. While those that are less traveled and considerably more difficult are marked in black on the map. The portages marked in black are not as maintained.

If canoeing is not your thing but you still want to enjoy the beauty of the park, there are three hiking trails with loops ranging from six to eighty-eight kilometers long. If you are new to interior camping, keep in mind that there are no outhouses or portable toilets in the interior of the park. What the campsites do have are wooden boxes known as a thunder-box, so at least there is a place to sit. All campsites also have a fire pit.

There are several old ranger cabins in the park as well. These are quite popular during the summer months. If not staying at a cabin, then your shelter will consist of the tent you bring in yourself. If traveling a number of portages, keep in mind that you have to carry all your gear, thus it is best to pack light. There are Internet sites that provide a list of the basic supplies that campers should bring if interior camping.

It is a wise choice to bring proper bad-weather gear; nothing spoils a trip more than being wet and cold. An excellent item to bring is a dry bag, available at most outdoor suppliers. Stuff the bag with extra clothes and if you have a large enough bag, stuff your sleeping bag into it as well. A wet sleeping bag makes for a miserable night. Many experienced interior campers have several dry bags to keep all their belongings dry. Just remember to make sure it is sealed tight so no moisture can get in.

Algonquin Park is an enormous park, but also a very popular park. If you can, it is best to enter the park from the north, as it is not as busy as the rest of the park. Many interior campers start their canoeing adventures in Algonquin and then move on to less occupied and more difficult routes. An Algonquin trip is sure to create many wonderful memories for the novice and the experienced canoeist alike.About the Author:

Author: Charles Kassotis

Water sports are often at the center of a family’s or an individual’s recreational schedule. Water skiing, speed boating, sailing or parasailing, scuba diving, and fishing are just some of the many exciting activities that you can enjoy on a stream, pond, lake, or sea. Depending on where you live and the places you want to visit while on vacation, you can probably find a suitable body of water for canoeing, a popular favorite of the water-loving sports crowd. You can rent a canoe or bring your own, and do it alone or take along a friend, making this one of the more versatile water activities that is readily available. Whether for a weekend getaway or a two-week vacation, you can enjoy a leisurely canoe ride as part of your fun schedule away from home.

	1. For less experienced or younger canoeists, try paddling around a pond or down a slow stream. This will help get the paddlers used to the momentum needed to keep the boat moving along. Canoeing in shallow water lets beginners learn to navigate water with little danger of drowning, especially with two or more people together. If one ends up in the water, the other may be able to help pull him out.

	2. Those with intermediate canoeing skills may want to take the boat out onto a lake in the area. With deeper waters, more of a current, and a higher volume of traffic, the canoeing experience will be more challenging, thus helping the paddlers to improve existing skills or to develop new ones. For this type of outing, the occupants of the canoe should wear life jackets and bring along safety equipment, like a radio and any needed supplies.

	3. A more challenging outing can be experienced in mountain streams, parkland lakes, or seawaters. These areas should be undertaken by only experienced canoeists, as unexpected currents, flood waters, or obstacles can throw a boater off-guard. A good idea would be to take a boating safety course first and learn how to manage a canoe in adverse circumstances, such as a boat leak, illness, or unexpected severe weather.

If you take your own canoe on one of these trips, be sure to check the boat for leaks, and make sure it is clean and ready for use. Don’t forget to see if the life preservers or jackets operate, as they should. Presumably, a rental boat would have undergone the same sort of inspection. When putting any boat into the water, make sure it appears seaworthy, and that you have all the necessary equipment to make a safe trip, especially if you’re headed to the wilderness.

Canoeing is fun but challenging. Learn boating safety and first aid practices in case a problem should occur, though hopefully none will. Depending on where you will be canoeing, find out who the maritime authorities are so you can get help or report problems, if necessary. Always take a communications device with you in case of emergency.

Author: Muna wa Wanjiru

In olden days, kayaking was applied for fishing purpose only. With changing times, though, the kayak has become a very popular sport. The kayaks are made from different materials and have various designs. The kayaks are used for sport, recreation and transportation. Traveling in a kayak is a wonderful, pleasant experience and golden opportunity to be close to the nature. A well-planned kayak trip offers a lot of fun, adventure and thrill. You can explore the beautiful lake, river and ocean through the kayak.

If you don’t have a kayak, you can get it from several kayak outfitters. You will need the kayak trailers for transporting the kayak safely. If the kayak is too heavy, then it is a tiring attempt for you. The kayak trailers definitely facilitate the transportation of kayaks to the desired spot.

There are several manufacturers of kayak trailers such as Trailex, Blue Mountain Outfitters, Magneta, AAA and Castle Craft Multiple. There is a big competition between these manufactures. Kayak trailers are available in various sizes such as single kayak trailer, two place kayak trailer, four place kayak trailer, ten place kayak trailer, nine place kayak trailer and sixteen place kayak trailer.

The single kayak trailer is created for the standard kayak of 12 feet length. Its maximum capacity is about 900lbs. It doesn’t require much assembly. As it is made from aluminum, it requires very less maintenance. It has adjustable carrying arms.

Two place kayak trailer is maintenance-free as it is made up of aluminum. In addition to that, it is lightweight and strong. It can be used for carrying two kayaks at a time. The four place kayak trailer is applied for carrying four kayaks at a time. Its maximum capacity is about 900lbs. the carrying arms of this kayak can be adjusted up and down.

Nine place kayak trailer features coated springs and epoxy. It is having the maximum capacity of about 1200lbs. Ten place kayak trailer can carry ten kayaks at a time. Its maximum capacity is about 1600lbs. Sixteen place kayak trailer features 12 adjustable web strap clips as well as epoxy coated springs. Its maximum capacity is about 1000lbs.

The biggest advantage of using the trailer is that it saves the time and creates fewer problems during loading and unloading of the kayak. Whenever you want to go out for kayaking, just attach the trailer to your car and drive off. When you return home after kayaking, no need to unload the kayak.

Most of the kayak trailers are the multi-kayak trailers. They have the equipment storage space underneath or between the kayaks. However, single or double kayak trailers are also available. Proper choice of kayak trailer is very important. It should be big enough to hold the kayak. You can buy a cheap kayak trailer and modify it to build a good trailer. During modification, be conscious about the balance and weight. The kayak should be properly balanced on the trailer. It should have proper weight to avoid getting blown away.

The Different Types of Kayaks Available in the Market Today

Author: Muna wa Wanjiru

Many sports require good gear as does kayaking, a thrilling and fun water sport with a kayak. There are many different types of kayaks available in the marketplace today so finding the right kind of kayaks can be a bit confusing.

It is important for you to know some basic things about kayaks. So, read on for helpful information to help you choose your perfect kayak.

Kayaks are basically a small boat that has a similar structure as a canoe. The origination of kayaks is also very interesting, as it was originated by Eskimos from Greenland and then it was also used by Eskimos from Alaska.

There is only one main difference in the canoe and kayaks and that is this: in kayaks paddler’s legs are hidden inside the kayaks. Kayaks have pointed bows and sterns and they are fully covered except for the cockpit, where paddler sits and then forwards the kayak using a double-bladed paddle.

The first kayaks were built for only one paddler. However, now many different types of kayaks are available which can accommodate more than one paddler.

Over the years, many different types of kayaks were designed. So now there is wide range of different types of kayaks that are available like whitewater kayaks, flat racing kayaks, recreation kayaks and many more.

Typical kayaks available in markets today can accommodate 1 to 4 users at a time.

Depending upon their structure, kayaks are classified under rigid kayaks, folding kayaks and inflatable kayaks. Rigid kayaks are basically kayaks, made of fiberglass, plastic, wood or Kevlar. Kayaks made up of plastics are very tough and long lasting. If you consider weight then fiberglass kayaks are lighter but they are more expensive; these fiberglass kayaks can be easily damaged but they are very easy to repair.

Wooden kayaks are usually hand made they have their own beauty. These wooden kayaks come in a kit so users first have to assemble all parts together before start kayaking, wooden kayaks require very low maintenance

Folding kayaks are very interesting type of kayaks that easily folded. Their biggest advantage is their portability and storage. These folding kayaks are usually made up of aluminum or wood and these are collapsible. The length of such folding kayaks is more compared to usual kayaks and they are collapsible. These kayaks are much more expensive that normal kayaks but since they have the advantage of small storage area, they are worth it.

Inflatable boats are specially designed kayaks for easy portability and storage. You can carry these kayaks using a carry bag. These kayaks are made up with PVC and they are very cheap. You can easily inflate this boat using electronic pump or with help of pump. Low pressure air is used in inflatable kayaks. These inflatable kayaks are not rigid and have pointed rafts. These types of kayaks are suitable for calm water and rivers.

Paddling kayaks require more effort. Plus these are bit slower than other kinds of boats. But still, kayaks are thrilling.

Kayaking Tips and Basics – What Should You Consider When You Intend to Pay for a Kayak?

Author: David S. Stratton

Deciding on which kayak to pay for seem to be a real hard work. This is especially true if you are an amateur to kayaking. You ought to know that kayaks are manufactured in all forms and shapes and they are made for all purposes. If you are new to kayaking, you should know that there are so many types of kayaks for you which can adapt to any given situation and in any nature of waters. If you take a closer look at the various kayak materials, you will come to a realization that kayaks are made to be light, strong and modified to meet every kayaking need.

Ahead of paying for a kayak, look at those that are specifically constructed to support your weight, your mode of paddling, the nature of water in which the kayak will be used, and above, your budget. But you should make sure that you do not keep ease of use and other precautionary measures aside. You should therefore always make sure that you have inspected the kayak and found it fit or be able to hold you and any other accessories. Remember that in some cases, you will have to stay in the kayak for longer hours and comfort should be an important feature.

What Are The Various Categories Of Kayaks?

Basically, three categories of kayaks exist. These are the kayaks meant for leisure, kayaks meant for touring and kayaks meant for fast-moving waters. If you intend kayaking in quiet waters, small lakes or along confined beaches, you should go in for a leisure kayak. Remember that there is usually enough sitting space and the firmness of the kayak can be guaranteed when kayaking on quiet waters. Keep in mind that so many of such kayaks have been fashioned to include other relaxation features and even for carrying kids and pets.

Another category of kayaks are kayaks meant for touring. These are specifically meant for kayaking in larger waters. They are much longer in shape and can be easily paddled across fast-moving and rugged waters. They have also been built with enough storage room to contain some of your accessories. These are also conveniently used in stormy weathers.

The last category of kayaks is the sturdy type of kayak meant for fast-moving waters. Of you intend to select on this type of kayak, you must first of all determine your purpose for making use of it. Remember that as a learner to kayaking, you may find this type of kayak a bit hard to kayak with and even to perform certain actions. For this reason, most of such kayaks should be left to those already knowledgeable about kayaking or those with advanced kayaking skills.

How to Know the Correct and Safe Kayaking Performances

Your security in kayaking should be of utmost and paramount importance. It will be important if you always endeavor to learn some precautionary measures ahead of going kayaking. Remember that going into the waters should not just be an aspect of fun. Fun can only be enjoyed if some element of safety is included into it. If you are learning some safety measures, make sure you also practice them. Keep in mind that practice makes perfect and it is only in practicing what you learn in the waters that you will become an expert kayaker.

In most cases, beginners will prefer renting their first kayaking equipments

Selecting the right kayak can be as simple as your past equipment rental experiences. If you rent any equipment, make sure that you are contented with using it. If you are very contented with the usage of such a kayak, you should consider buying any of such similar equipments for personal use. Remember that the objective of every learner is to become perfect through the most comfortable means. Having your personal equipments will encourage you to practicing for perfection. Remember to buy according to your budget. There are so many used and strong kayak equipments which can be obtained at reasonable prices.

White water rafting is high on many people’s list of things to do here. With some lots of good rapids and a stunning river with high level its superlative.
There are some very exhilarating sections with space between to lay back and float along taking in the landscape and enjoying the nature, particularly the many species of birds to be found here.

Fish eagles cry from the clear skies overhead, giant monitor lizards bask in the equatorial sunshine and flocks of long-tailed cormorants herd schools of fish into the shallows.
The world’s longest river roars to life as the White Nile minutes after slipping quietly from Lake Victoria. It thunders between heavily forested islands and then leaps wildly into a series of spectacular drops.

The roar of the rapids drifts upstream with the gentle breeze. Wooden canoes laden with excited locals congregate in the calm waters anxious to see our rafts in action.

To the amazement of our audience, we plunge into the maelstrom and ride the mountainous waves downstream. Our rafts explode through huge walls of whitewater and drift through the warm green pools (27°C) in the equatorial sunshine.

This is white water rafting at its very best. The beauty of the Nile in Uganda is nothing short of spectacular and unknown to all but the fortunate few who have had the pleasure of standing on its banks.

‘Here I stood on the brink of the Nile … and nothing could surpass it . John Hanning Speke, 28th July, 1862 on ‘discovering’ the Victorian Source of the great river near where we start our rafting trips.

The multitude of rapids between the beautiful mid-river islands allow us to choose softer options of white water rafting for those not willing to subject themselves to certain capsize of the raft or for long solo swims through the rapids.

Expert guides are professionally trained to cater to the needs of each adventurer who joins them on the river.

One day white water rafting – 31 kms

‘Forward, left-turn, hold on.’ I reach for the rope that traverses the perimeter of the raft and grasp my paddle tightly as the river drops away beneath us.
Seconds after I fill my lungs with a healthy gulp of fresh air, a giant wall of green water is towering above us. The raft buckles as the bow explodes into whitewater and droplets of spray sparkle in the sunshine. Moments later we are under water.

Dressed lightly for a day in the sunshine the slightly cooler waters are a welcome relief. A split second later we emerge ecstatic as the raft summits a giant wave in what has become the Nile’s roller coaster.
Another trough looms ahead and I exhale an enthusiastic whoop before preparing for the next dousing.

Minutes later the raft is rocking gently in the calm pool below the legendary Big Brother rapid, no-one escaped the dunking and it is smiles and disbelief all around.

Some of us turn upstream to watch as the next raft races down the long green tongue of the rapid and accelerates toward the first towering wave. In popular paddle-rafts, each person joins as a member of a team and a professional guide captains the team.

Paddlers are instructed comprehensively on how best to enjoy themselves on the water and on all aspects of safety including the use of safety kayaks which accompany every raft trip on the water.
The highly-trained white water rafting safety kayakers are world class paddlers who adeptly pilot their tiny boats through the mountainous waves of each rapid ahead of the rafts.

When rafts flip upside down or people are washed overboard they are nearby to provide assistance in getting people back to their boats. The trip on the water begins slowly and the first few kilometres give the raft guides an opportunity to train their crews fully on all aspects of Nile rafting.
The young river dances into action at Bujagali Falls as if anxious to race to the thirsty deserts downstream and one major rapid follows swiftly after another for most of the morning.

By the time the rafts drift toward Wakisi island, a wholesome and inviting lunch is waiting eager consumers.
There is nothing quite like a morning on the Nile for whetting one’s appetite. Succulent pineapples, giant avocadoes, crisp bell peppers and tasty carrots are all organically grown in nearby villages.

Fresh bread, roasted ham, salami and juicy tomatoes all combine wonderfully well to satisfy even the most insatiable appetites from a morning of fresh air, wildwater and sunshine. After a leisurely lunch on beautiful Wakisi island, the white water rafting enter Wild waters Reserve which is a private conservation initiative started by Adrift to protect the unique flora and fauna of the mid-stream islands of the Nile.

There is more time between the rough water but the rapids on the Nile become larger and more spectacular. It makes the most spectacular video footage as riders are often thrown in the air before hitting the racing current and being swept downstream to the calm pool below.

A canoeing trip for the entire family is a great way to spend a lazy summer afternoon. Before packing up and heading to the nearest river, however, give some thought to preparing your kids for this special adventure to make sure they have a safe, fun time. Like adults, they could benefit from special coaching or preparation before boarding a livery or family canoe and pushing out into a rushing stream.

Make sure your kids know how to swim. Hopefully they have taken lessons and received basic swimmers’ certifications up to this point. If not, you will need to keep a eye on them to be sure they don’t fall in the water.

Check their safety equipment. Are the lifejackets inflated properly? Do kids know how to use them or other life-preserving equipment if needed? Take a few minutes to show the proper use of these items so kids won’t get confused or overwhelmed in the event of an accident.

Take along sunscreen and sunglasses. Kids’ skin and eyes are more delicate than those of adults, so it is important to protect them from sunburn or eye damage, especially if you will be in the water for a couple of hours or longer. Have them apply sunscreen right before boarding the canoe. Apply it again each hour afterward. A cap with a beak to help deflect the sun’s rays from children’s faces is another helpful idea.

Bring a bottle of water and perhaps a snack. This will keep young children from clamoring for the ride to be over so they can get something to eat. You can put these items in a tote bag, or stash them under the canoe seat, but try to keep the kids from eating them until later in the trip, as a snack will give them something to look forward to.

Have them visit the restrooms before getting in the canoe. Splashing water can make little ones want to go to the bathroom. Simply being in the boat for a couple of hours can make it difficult for them to hold out. Since there is no way to use the bathroom on a canoe, make sure they visit the restroom right before boarding.

Teach them water safety. Don’t let the kids horseplay in the canoe by splashing each other with the oars, standing up in the boat, leaning too far over the side, or making gestures t passing boaters. Navigating a body of water requires careful attention and respect for the passage and for others. Kids need to learn early in life how to navigate a canoe trip so they will be able to take more such trips in the future and perhaps manage the canoe on their own someday.

If you like the great outdoors, dont mind getting a little wet and want an adrenaline rush to go along with it, you should definitely try white water rafting. Rafting is an exhilarating, yet dangerous, activity. Water rafting involves floating in a raft down a tumultuous river full of jagged rocks and other rough terrain. With such rough water, you are bound to be knocked around the tiny raft as you fight with your oars against the current, and you are also bound to be knocked into the water. You had better wear a life vest as the current is much too strong to swim in. If any of this sounds interesting to you, and, in fact, if any of this sound exhilarating to you, then white river rafting is definitely for you.

Seek Professional Help

Rafting should only be done with a professional for your first or first few times out on the river. That is because only a professional knows what to expect. White water rafting is unpredictable enough. Anything can happen and you might as well have a professional handy to tell you what you could expect. A professional will show you the correct gear to wear, such as life jackets, and will show you the correct ways of riding the river.

If you do not know where to go to find a professional, check the local tourism bureau. Many states with white water rivers offer white water rafting tours as part of their tourism enticements. Of course, you can always do an internet search. Depending on where you are the availability of white water rapids, you should be able to find a few good white water rafting professionals who will be happy to take you out for your first time. The fees vary so you should shop around first to get a good deal.

Once you have been out with a professional and you feel comfortable going out on your own, you should first gather all the necessary equipment. You do not want to be stuck in the middle of a rough river without the proper equipment. You should always be prepared and pack plenty of gear. You should also have a first aid kit on hand in case something goes wrong, and you should also make sure that all of your gear floats.

White water rafting is an exhilarating, albeit dangerous, activity for those who want a taste of the great outdoors peppered with a little adrenaline. Just make sure you prepare yourself and that you are truly ready should you go out on your own. You should never be ashamed to ask a professional to accompany you for your first or first several times. Even if you have to pay for lessons, it is well worth it when you consider how much fun you will have on your white water rafting trip.
